ABOUT Round Lake

Round Lake came from Glacial Lake, Aitkin, a lake formed by the weight of an ice cap up to one mile thick and lasting for possibly 100,000 years. Lake Aitkin was formed 7,000 to 9,000 years ago from a melting glacial water and was nearly twice the size of Mille Lacs Lake as we know it today. This would have covered and included Round Lake, Big Pine, Turtle, Partridge, Bay and all other lakes within a radius up to approximately 10 miles of current Mille Lacs Lake!

Currently, Round Lake has about 120 homes and cabins. Many of these residents have owned property for many generations. Karen McCormick has put together a book with stories of the past that are interesting and nostalgic that consists of original owners and/or memories of the past of many of the cabins, properties and homes. If you have any information that you’d like to add to the book about your home or cabin, please email Karen at kmmccormick@embarqmail.com.

This is a painting done by an artist, in approx. 1960, who was staying at the “Crescent Park Resort”, owned by Al and Betsy Gottschalk. That resort was located on the south end of the lake, where the Denardo home is today! [Thank you to Roger Gottschalk for the photo.]
